High School Reunion

Friday night I got together with a couple long time high school buddies for an evening of walleye fishing on Lake Minnetonka.  The night started very slow but we stuck with it until we were able to land two nice eaters.  This fish went 18" and was Matt's first walleye through the ice on Lake Minnetonka!

This was Tim's first walleye through the ice and it came in at about 20".  So I guess you could say this trip was about the 2 firsts that we had in our shanty.  Both fish hit a northland buckshot jigging spoon with a minnow head on it.

The weather has been so miserable for those of you that haven't noticed or don't live in MN.  We have had temps in the negatives every night and wind like you wouldn't believe in the middle of the frozen tundra of a lake.  It is amazing that we have been catching anything at all.  I can tell you though that sitting in a fish house that is 70 degrees makes it much more fun, just don't try to move it or go outside for any reason.

Way To Go Troy!

My call out worked.  Troy read my post and drove up from Kansas City and ice fished for his first time ever.  Not only did he get to ice fish, he actually got to catch some walleyes.  Two firsts for the boy from Kansas City.  This trip will leave a smile on my face for a long time.  Thanks for coming up to see how we fish in MN bud!  Hopefully this is not your last ice fishing adventure.

Since the last call out worked so good I am going to try another.  This one is to a friend, fellow guide, idol, and fishing maniac.  Many of you know him as a muskie guide but he has many more talents!  He goes by trophyencounters.com....yeah thats right Travis Frank.  I have spent many of hours fishing with this kid growing up but it has been to long.  You and I need to get back together and make it happen.  Every time we fish for any species good things happen.  His job at MN Bound has been eating up all his time and I know it is killing him to not be on the water every day like he has in the past.  So on that note, Trav we need to get out fishing.  I have the house, it's time to scream fish on again buddy!  I miss it.

Fatty!

Well well...  I am finally back to a computer.  I took part of a day off the lake (I have been on the metro ice for four days/nights straight) to update you all on what has been going on.  The action continues to be great, we are catching enough eaters to stay busy with an occasional giant mixed in.  This fish was so fat...no atkins diet for this walleye.  This time of year they really seem to pack the weight on in preparation for the spring spawn.  They must eat everything they see to get this fat.  This fish was 28 1/2" and was over 10 pounds.  I think it was carrying twins!

I am headed back to the lake right now, I will be reporting back soon!

The ice conditions continue to improve.  If they were good before, they are great now.  As I write this I am looking out onto Lake Waconia and see trucks and fish houses every where.

Here You Go Kansas City!!

The walleye action continues to be hot on the metro lakes.  Pauly(smelly) and I had a great evening on the ice on Saturday night.  We caught lots of small fish with a few nice eaters mixed in.

This is one of 12 fish that we were able to catch.  We caught half of our fish jigging and the other half on set lines with either a fathead or a shiner.

This post is a call out to Troy in Kansas City!  He has been wanting to come up here and fish for 2 years and has yet to make it happen, well Troy I think it is time.  Get your hinny up here!

The ice conditions on Lake Waconia are great.  Most of the lake has 10-12" with only a few areas with 7-9".  These were the areas that froze up a few days later then the rest.  As for Lake Minnetonka, that is a whole different story.  If you are venturing out on Minnetonka please be careful.  The ice is as thin as 1" in a lot of areas.  I am a 16 year veteranto ice fishing, and many people call me nuts for what I do on the ice but I will tell you that I am even a bit cautious out there right now.

I have a few trips this week so I should have some more info soon.
